We have about 80 brood cows with Angus, Gelbvieh and Simmental all represented. We started out raising and showing Gelbvieh cattle in 1994. Some of our successes include Grand Champion Female at the Ohio Beef Expo, Ohio State Fair, Eastern Regional’s, and local shows. Grand Champion Bulls, Ohio State Fair, Junior Nationals, and local shows.
In 2006 we decided to step out of the show industry and focus more on the beef industry. With 90% of our calves going to feedlots, it was obvious to us that we must grow a product that producers will want. We began selecting cattle with good carcass EPD's and acceptable growth traits to meet industry needs. Our goal was a finished steer that would hang an acceptable weight carcass and would grade choice or better. In doing so we incorporated the Angus breed for clean up bulls and also added a few Angus cows to produce some balancers. We selected the Angus breed because of their advantage in their marbling traits and utilized the Gelbvieh for growth and muscle.
After doing some pencil pushing we discovered that our cow size was too big. And if we wanted to make our cows more profitable we needed to cut input and increase output. Based on our calculation a 1250 to 1300 pound cow would be the most economical. We are currently working on bringing our cow size down and have discovered that some of our best producing cows are our smaller girls. They are the ones that maintain their flesh, milk great, breed back and calve AI on 365 day intervals, and wean off the highest percent of their body weight. Their calves should feed out quicker and more efficiently as well. Also to maximize our calves feeding efficiency we have started selecting bulls that have been tested for feed efficiency. Last year one of the bulls we used was the EGL New Era from Eagle Pass Ranch. He was the highest feed efficiency bull in their test this past year. We also used some bulls that performed well in the Leachman Feed Efficiency test. By using the Leachman bulls we have introduced some of the Simmental into our herd.
Our hearts are still in the Gelbvieh breed and we continue to strive to produce Gelbvieh cattle that will meet the demands of the beef industry. Our lively hood depends on it.
